Finding a name: 8 rules that actually help

1. Say the name out loud fifty times

A name that looks lovely on paper also has to work when shouted across a playground. Say it with the surname, as a nickname, and in an exasperated tone.

2. Think about the initials

Anna Sophie Schmidt becomes A.S.S. Children notice combinations like this. Write the initials down before you commit.

3. Popularity cuts both ways

Emilia and Noah have topped the German statistics for years: lovely, familiar — and probably three of them at nursery.

4. Check the variants before committing

Almost every name exists in several spellings. Every name page lists the variants — often that is where you find the name you actually meant.

5. Use origin as a compass
